Vehicles

Although one vehicle is better suited for the rally than another, the Morocco Desert Challenge is open to all types of vehicles: 4×4’s, buggies, motorbikes, quads, SSV’s and trucks.

The Morocco Desert Challenge is not an official FIA/FIM rally. This means we are more flexible when it comes to allowing “special” vehicles. However, some important safety measures should be taken into consideration. In this section we tell you which minimum requirements exist per vehicle-category:

Motorbikes​​​​​​​ and quads

1.1. General

All types of off-road motorbikes are allowed, but try to avoid bikes of more than 160 kg. All types of quads are allowed: 4×2 race quads, 4×4 quads, ATV’s.

1.2. Safety

For all motorbike & quad riders (in all categories): it is compulsory to wear protective clothing at all times during the rally and during the ‘liaisons’.

  • Minimum requirements:
    • a protective harness, motocross boots, gloves, motocross outfit, helmet and goggles
    • airbag vest
  • Recommended: neck brace.

For those participating in the ‘Rally PRO’ category, a personal race-insurance is compulsory (can be purchased via the organisation).

Other material, to carry on the bike/quad at all times:

  • Minimum 3 liters of drinking water
  • Iritrack: more info under Safety
  • GPS UNIK 4 & Sentinel (only in the Rally-PRO category): more info under Navigation and Safety
  • roadbook roller
  • basic tool kit for small repairs (a multitool, duct tape, etc.)
  • a basic medical kit (band aids, pain killers, etc.)
  • 1 fire flare
  • compass & torch with stroboscopic funtion
  • cell phone with Moroccon sim-card

1.3. Fuel autonomy

Motorbikes & quads need to have a fuel autonomy of minimum 250 kms. Normally speaking the distance between fuel provisioning points (check points) is around 200-220 km, but one needs to consider extra kilometres as a result of navigation mistakes or extra fuel consumption in for instance the dunes.

SSVs

2.1. General

All types of SSV's are allowed

2.2. Safety

For SSV riders, it is compulsory to wear protective clothing at all times during the rally and during the ‘liaisons’.

  • wearing a helmet is compulsory at all times. We highly recommend the Hans-system.
  • wearing a race-outfit and gloves is obligatory.

For those participating in the ‘Rally-PRO’ category, a race insurance is obligatory (can be purchased via the organisation).

RAID: no obligations, standard SSV’s are allowed

Other equipment, obligatory to have aboard the SSV at all times:

  • Minimum 3 liters of drinking water per person
  • RAID: A “Smalltrack” (tracking system by Marlink) and a Tripy (digital road book) are provided by the organisation
  • RALLY PRO:
    • Iritrack: more info under Safety
    • GPS UNIK 4 & Sentinel (only in the Rally-PRO category): more info under Navigation and Safety
  • basic tool kit for small repairs (incl. a multitool, duct tape, etc.)
  • a basic medical kit (band aids, pain killers, etc.)
  • 3 fire flares & 1 smoke bomb (can be ordered via the organisation)
  • compass & torch with stroboscopic funtion
  • a jack & 2 spare wheels
  • towing rope
  • fire extinguisher
  • knife (within reach of the pilot & copilot to cut the safety belts if necessary)

All cars and buggies, (prototypes or standard, 4×2 or 4×4) are allowed to register.

3.2. Safety

Rally PRO: In this categories, the following protective clothing is obligatory:

  • wearing a helmet. We highly recommend the Hans-system.
  • wearing a protective racing suit and gloves.

The vehicle needs to be equipped with the following items:

  • a roll cage
  • racing seats
  • 4-point safety belts

For those participating in the ‘Rally-PRO’ category, a race insurance is obligatory (can be purchased via the organisation).

RAID: no obligations, standard cars and buggies are allowed

Other equipment, obligatory to have aboard the car/truck at all times (and for all categories):

  • Minimum 3 liters of drinking water per person
  • RAID: A “Smalltrack” (tracking system by Marlink) and a Tripy (digital road book) are provided by the organisation
  • RALLY PRO:
  • tool kit for small repairs (incl. a multitool, duct tape, etc.)
  • a basic medical kit (band aids, pain killers, etc.)

  • towing rope & kinetic rope
  • fire extinguisher & safety triangle
  • 1 or 2 shovels
  • minimum 2 sand ladders
  • knife (within reach of the pilot & copilot to cut the safety belts if necessary)
  • cell phone with Moroccan sim-card

3.3. Fuel autonomy

Cars and buggies need to have a fuel autonomy of minimum 550 km since they cannot use the fuel provisioning during the stages (on the checkpoints).

It’s not always necessary to mount an expensive extra petrol tank. It is allowed to use extra recipients (jerry cans), to secure it in your vehicle and to empty it in your main tank as soon as you can.

Trucks

4.1 General

Trucks are allowed to register on the condition that all axles are powered (4×4, 6×6, 8×8).

4.2 Safety

The following protective clothing is obligatory:

  • wearing a helmet. We highly recommend the Hans-system.
  • wearing a protective racing suit and gloves.

The vehicle needs to be equipped with the following items:

  • a roll cage
  • racing seats
  • 4-point safety belts
